Disenfranchising US Citizens: Trump & GOP Harm Immigrant Families in the midst of Pandemic
In fact, for all other U.S. citizens living in households where income taxes were paid solely using a social security number - one set of rules applied "franchising others" resulting in the government's automatically distributing checks to those households that met the financial thresholds while yet - unique only to immigrant households, (which we all know to be the nemesis and target of this administration and the GOP), the same rules did not apply, therefore "disenfranchising" hard-working tax-paying immigrant families from receipt of the stimulus. Even the more egregious was the exclusion of U.S. citizen spouses married to and/or living with family members, friends, etc. that file with their social security numbers. While the rest of the nation's U.S. citizens received a stimulus check no questions asked, countless other U.S. citizens living in a household shared with anyone filing with a TaxID were excluded. The unequal system disproportionately harmed black and Latino families - namely their U.S. citizen relatives who were blocked from the constitutionally promised -equal protection- resulting in grossly disproportionate harm, infections, and deaths as seen by COVID19 case reports.
To use McEany's words, I Harlon J. Wilson, the U.S. citizen spouse of Salvadoran national seeking asylum in the U.S. have been blatantly "disenfranchised" by this clearly "unequal system" which overstepped my 14th Amendment Right to Equal Protection. - yet, my immigrant husband, a taxpayer for 15-years who filed annual returns using the official gov't issued TaxID, was the administration's cause to define our household "mixed-status," in an effort to discriminate against my immigrant husband and myself as a U.S. citizen married to an immigrant. Excluding us and countless other immigrant families from receiving the benefit, a maneuver that can only be seen as a racist/nationalist move by any standard, proving the Trump posse will stop at nothing to bend the rules to their advantage.
While my husband lay critically ill suffering from the excruciating symptoms of COVID19 - the same administration launched an "unequal system" for disqualifying "mixed-status households" from receiving much-needed stimulus checks that could help countless immigrant families to keep food on the table and navigate the fallout from the devastating impacts of the planetary pandemic that has disproportionately impacted black, Latino, and immigrant families across the nation. Once again proving the Trump administration and the GOP flip-flop solely to benefit themselves, the level of hypocrisy out front and in the open should be prosecutable to the highest extent of the law!
Another example of Trump and the GOP's blatant hypocrisy can be seen in the appointment of Supreme Court justice, Amy Coney Barrett. While in the final year of the Obama presidency the GOP created every reason not to confirm the president's nomination to the highest court - some congressmen inviting that they should be called out if they ever change their position on the matter (See: Lindsey Graham Flip-Flop) and yet, in a GOP led presidency, the same individuals, once again flip-flopped to their advantage.
Despite the blatant self-serving hypocrisy, the 14TH Amendment spells it out very clearly, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." ~ 14th Amendment. For immigrant families disenfranchised by the racist regime in Washington, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
