2024 Draft Declaration of Independence for the New Era
A Reunified Nation & People

Happy Independence Day. Or is it?
For many so-called "patriots," freedom has a resounding ring. For a growing majority of American co-habitants, the multi-cultural melting pot we've become signals the loss of white dominance, conservative power, and fear of "Poisoning the blood of America."
As this 55-year-old U.S. citizen, same-sex husband of a handsome undocumented Latino from El Salvador, can attest, life in the United States has never been
free. Celebrating a decade of marriage as we contemplate the holiday of independence, the word "patriot" translates to the term "Bully," synonymous with the machismo profile of a Made-in-the-USA, NRA card-carrying, gun-toting, white, heterosexual, "Jesus and John Wayne" kind of guy. Try as I may not to stereotype, I can only speak my own truth. Having been born a thin, effeminate, and articulate child, the physical and emotional scars of which still carry forward with me to this day, there's no other way to describe the bullies on the playground, boardrooms, and political institutions who serve as barriers for already marginalized populations accesss to fairness, equality, justice, and the pursuit of happiness.
How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation
Now considered a senior citizen, I'm an older, wiser, stronger, and more courageous man myself. But that still fails to relinquish the tightening grip of conservative policies, self-empowered people, and political machinery that still to this day holds me, my husband, and millions of other marginalized, bullied, beaten, and abused individuals fair and equal access. The proverbial scales of justice remain unequal, while the conservative oppressors maintain a finger (more like all ten toes, ten fingers, two arms, two legs, and two cheeks) firmly seated on the scale.
Let us get one thing "straight": the United States of America is [not] free for me and millions of others, too. To contemplate the point, on this day of independence, I took it upon myself to edit the original text of the Declaration of Independence. No disrespect intended to our nation's founders, history, or patriot neighbors; this first (of upcoming) blog entry serves only to amuse my creative outlet while educating the public with our personal stories of truth.
Let us not take this parody declaration too seriously. But let us also never forget the terrifying truths of our learned experiences of living within the borders of the states under a MAGA regime. As a gay male deeply in love and celebrating ten years married to a green card pending undocumented who may soon face yet another threat of deportation, a cornerstone of Trump's first term and a repeated promise of a historic deportation force, the prospects are grim but not without a sliver of hope.
American bullies, Christian Nationalists, and other conservative oppressors and self-ordained judges and juries of otherwise equal human beings are seeking to constrain the personal liberties of anyone who differs from their views. For LGBTQ+ (described as an "abomination"), Hispanic individuals and families that some conservatives disgustingly referred to as "wetbacks," beautiful brown body people, non-Christians or agnostics, or people with other Spiritual beliefs or people with no religious beliefs at all, freedom is availed to just a few.
Through lies, deception, the rewriting of history, canceling textbooks, scrapping programs that celebrate diversity and inclusion, and unequal policies intent to disadvantage countless women, immigrants, and other minorities, America certainly is far from the "home of the free and brave," lest you fit the mold of straight, white, Christian, male, conservative, Republican, and especially if you're a man of means).
Have you seen the men and women climbing the wall of our nation's capital? Made visible on the January 6th insurrection, I've seen the face of the bully before. As the past decade of battling for my husband's green card has revealed, the bully never sleeps. Let me be clear -- that is not to say that ALL heterosexual white men stand between freedom, justice, and the proverbial "American way" for marginalized populations in America. But it sure feels like the majority for every time I'm told, "Tell him to go back and come back 'the right way.'"
Freedom is NOT forcefully asserting one's will over another. Freedom is undoubtedly NOT any man, woman, Republican, or Christian telling me who I am permitted to love! Nor is it asserting one's white privilege to dominate people of color, differing ethnicities, or cultures, nor dictating a woman's decisions over her anatomy. Freedom is also not hoarding the slices of freedom pie as if there's not enough to go around, nor conquering other people's land to amass wealth for just a few.
As I pondered what freedom for the marginalized would look like, I took it upon myself on this day of supposed "Independence" to edit an updated version of the Declaration for modern-day society. The following should be considered a work of creative art that is solely my work and is not actual content, nor is it a real effort to propose anything.
As you read my fictitious edits, I trust you'll see the stark similarities inherent in the many harmful acts Trump and conservative radicals have already perpetrated. With a sinister promise for more of the same inhumane overreach of American policy, I point you to the Trump 2025 plan.
Freedom and independence, democracy, justice, and the (equal) pursuit of happiness have never before been more at risk!

FAKE EDITS TO THE ORIGINAL DECLARATION (AND STARTLINGLY SIMILAR PAST AND PRESENT BEHAVIORS OF CANDIDATE TRUMP)
The unanimous Declaration of the
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that
- He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
- He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
- He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
- He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
- He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
- He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
- He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
- He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
- He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
- He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
- He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
- He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
- He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
- For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
- For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
- For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
- For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
- For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
- For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
- For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
- For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
- For suspending our own Legislatures and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
- He has abdicated Government here by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
- He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
- He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
- He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
- He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

To that end, we, the people empowered by each individual vote and bound by our shared human connection as one body, one planet, and one nation of the world, do hereby declare individual and collective independence from tyranny.
